Description
Independent bookstores have long served as vital third spaces: welcoming, community-driven and protected places beyond home or work where people can gather, connect, and organize. In an era of rising authoritarian rhetoric, increased book bans, and growing harassment, these spaces are more important than ever. This session will explore how to intentionally shape your store as a civic stronghold: a place where democratic values, inclusion, and access are protected and celebrated. We’ll discuss how to host nonpartisan voter drives, provide resources for civic engagement, and partner with local organizations. You’ll also learn practical de-escalation strategies for handling in-store hostility, as well as ways to protect your staff and set healthy boundaries. Whether you're building a new third space or strengthening an existing one, you’ll leave with actionable tools to support your community — and yourself — without burning out.
